The Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS) promotes access to educational opportunities and provides academic support to students who have demonstrated talent, creativity, intellect, and determination in the face of significant personal, economic, educational, cultural and/or social challenges.

In keeping with the University’s commitment to equity, access, and advocacy for diversity and social justice, OUS provides the resources necessary to support these talented students, who have shown abundant potential to thrive in and contribute to the Colgate experience.

The OUS Scholars Program

The OUS program begins with the Summer Institute, a five-week residential program designed to ease students’ transition and immerse them in Colgate’s rigorous academic culture.

Students live on campus from July to mid-August and participate in two courses — ranging from cancer biology to education studies to sociology — taught by Colgate faculty. Emphasis is placed on developing critical reading, analytical writing, and qualitative literacy skills.

 

OUS Scholars participate in four years of programming and engagement, which include programs that: assist them in choosing a major; develop and sustain social and cultural capital; and encourage the pursuit of off-campus study opportunities, research, fellowships, and career planning

Being a part of OUS allowed me to build skills, relationships, and connections that helped me succeed at Colgate and beyond. It was the foundation upon which I was able to build and sustain my support networks at Colgate.
